Aids and HIV

HIV or Human Immunodeficiency Virus is the virus that causes AIDS. The term HIV has been used since 1986, which is the name for the retrovirus that was first proposed as a disease that causes AIDS.

This virus will attack the white blood cells called CD4 cells, which will cause damage to the immune system so will result in the body can be easily attacked by diseases. AIDS or Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome is a disease caused by HIV virus. If you have HIV then you will not be directly affected by the disease of AIDS, because HIV virus takes long enough to damage the human immune system.

Then, how HIV can be transmitted? HIV can be transmitted through body fluids such as blood, semen, vaginal fluids, breast milk and other fluids containing blood. The HIV virus can be transmitted through unsafe sex with someone who has been infected with the HIV virus. And one way to prevent HIV virus from sexual intercourse is to use a condom. HIV also can be transmitted through infected blood received during a blood transfusion where blood is not known to be infected with HIV virus or the use of un-sterile needles. The HIV virus can also be transmitted through sharing needles together. Usually this is done in people who inject drugs with someone who is infected. Please also note that the HIV virus can be spread by pregnant women to their babies during pregnancy or childbirth and is also transmitted through breast milk.

HIV virus testing in the body can be known through an on HIV antibody test. Testing also can be done through blood samples, saliva or urine. Testing can be done quickly and results can be received between 10-20 minutes. If positive results in general will be further confirmatory tests.

Up to now there is no medication to treat someone who is affected by the HIV virus. Will still be very possible for someone living with HIV to live a very productive with the extra follow a diet high in protein and healthy kilojoules, set the level stress-level, practicing safe sex by using condoms, and do not drink water that has not cooked, also did not consume alcohol and not smoking, wash hands, and ensuring the spiritual and emotional well-being and attention to opportunistic infections as early as possible.

AIDS AND AYURVEDA

Aids and HIV

Article by DR DAVINDER SINGH

AIDS AND AYURVEDAAIDS-MODERN CONCEPT Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome(AIDS) is not a single disease but it is a syndrome- set of diseases, which results from the destruction of the body’s defence by human immune deficiency virus (HIV).

AIDS-AYURVEDIC CONCEPTAccording to Ayurveda AIDS as a disease can be correlated with kashaya, rajayakshma and ojoksahya diseases described in Acient Ayurvedic literature by Ancient Ayurvedic Acharayas.

AIDS is caused due to vitiation of kaphaj dosha.Kaphaj dosha along with other doshas tends to block the sarotasa (path) of rasadi dhatus, due to which rasadi dhatus are unable to reach there locations in the body due to which sapt dhatu gets deteriorated thus causing a disease called AIDS.

CAUSE OF AIDS

AIDS occurs due to infection of human immunodeficiency virus. HIV is an infection that attacks and destroys the body’s infection fighting cells, called lymphocytes, and causes the disease called AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome). HIV was identified in the United States in 1981. So many cases have been reported that HIV/AIDS is considered an epidemic.

Who gets it?HIV and AIDS have been reported throughout the world, affecting all age groups, including infants born to mothers who are HIV infected. Certain people are at higher risk for getting HIV and AIDS. These include-

Homosexual and bisexual men

People who use intravenous (IV) drugs

People who share needles (for drug use, tattooing, or body piercing)

Heterosexuals who have more than one sexual partner

Anyone who has sex with anyone in these groups

Anyone who has a sexual partner who has tested positive for HIV.

Also at risk are people who receive transfusions of blood or blood products that haven’t been tested for HIV.

Healthcare professionals who are accidentally pricked by a contaminated needle also risk developing the infection.

SYMPTOMS

The major symptoms are:

* Loss of appetite, drastic loss of weight-emaciation

* Fatigue and lethargy

* Susceptibility to allergies and contagious diseases

* Skin irritations

* Bronchial disorders, often leading to tuberculosis of the lungs

* Damage to intestinal flora resulting in diarrhoea, dysentery, gastritis

* Wide fluctuations in body temperature. prolonged fever

* Sleeplessness etc

INVESTIGATION AND DIAGNOSISHow is it diagnosed?HIV is diagnosed through a blood test called the ELISA test, which detects HIV antibodies. If the ELISA test is positive for HIV, your doctor will order additional blood tests, such as one called the Western blot test, to confirm the result. If you are diagnosed with HIV, your doctor will perform a complete physical exam and take a complete medical history, including a discussion of your sexual history, any sexually transmitted diseases you have had, and any history of drug use. Your doctor will order tests for other infections that can become worse if you have HIV. These include hepatitis B, tuberculosis, and syphilis. He or she will also order tests for opportunistic infections, according to the types of symptoms you are having.

TREATMENT OF AIDS

The first step to stem the disease is to ensure that good and healthy atmosphere should be present around the patient.Patient ahould be assured by relatives that the disease is curable and negative things should not be discussed before the patient.

Well nourishing and easily digestable food should be given.

Light exercises should be done.

Patient physical health and immunity should be boosted with the help of ayurvedic rejuvenators (rasayans) this will strengthen the internal system and stimulate his appetite

After gaining some strength, shodhana chikitsa (purification of body) should be done for expelling toxins from the body through panchkarma therapy. The medications administered at this stage are not hard or drastic, but soft, ghee-based so that the patient withstands them with ease

Blood is purified with appropriate Ayurvedic medications.

A strengthening diet along with medicated ghee preparations and soups is recommended. But spicy, oily and acidic foods are to be avoided. A little alcohol is recommended as anupana (carrier) to aid the digestive process, and also remove blockages in the flow of Rasadi dhatus, i.e. srothorodha

Patient is advised to do regular exercise. If the patient is incapable of exercising or running due to weakness, then steaming (swedanam) is also recommended. reason behind this is ‘Heated blood is said to weaken, and even destroy, the virus in some cases’

Experience has shown that certain herbo-mineral compounds prepared as per the formulae prescribed by ancient ayurvedic acharyas like Agasthya, Charaka and others for the treatment of Kshaya have brought about significant results in improving the condition of AIDS patients. The Rasayana and Vajikara effects of the these medicines are good for the patients.SELF CARE TIPS

Self-care tipsYou can prevent infection with HIV by practicing safe sex and choosing your sexual partners carefully. Never use intravenous drugs or share needles. If you have decided to get a tattoo or body piercing, make sure the person providing the service is using only clean, sterile needles that have not been used on anyone else. While it is now highly unlikely that you will develop HIV from an infected blood transfusion, you can donate your own blood before any surgeries to ensure the safety of the blood if you need a transfusion. If you engage in activities that put you at a high risk for HIV and AIDS, get tested. Even if your test is negative, you should follow your doctor’s recommendations for a schedule of retesting. If you have been diagnosed with HIV or AIDS, follow your doctor’s treatment recommendations. If you are sexually active, always use a condom and tell your partner that you are HIV positive. Call your doctor immediately if your symptoms change in any way. Never donate blood or blood products, semen, or any organs.

Aids and HIV Historical Perspective

Aids and HIV

On the date December 1st 2007 many people across the globe united together to prove that they were concerned about the same on the worlds aids day. It was first established in the year 1988 and was an attempt to raise the issue in front of the people so that they are aware about the same. Ever since this disease has been discovered I must tell you that more than 27 million peoples have died due to this disease.

The earliest known HIV infection was found in the year 1959. Many scientists believe that the sub species of the Chimpanzees have been the reason for this kind of virus and we all know that this disease spread from a monkey. This fact was discovered between the period 1940 and the early 1950s.

I would now like to describe what happened during some of the periods in the past 50 years. The description is as follows:

1. 1979-81
There were 31 deaths during the early 1981 and around 234 deaths in the year 1981.

Those people who do not take enough precautions were the most to be effected by this disease. And this was the period when many such cases were discovered. During this period it was known as the CDC.

2. 1982
In the year 1982 there was a revolution in the researches which were carried out on the causes for AIDS. There were many reasons found and I must tell you that the name AIDS which stands for the acquired immune deficiency syndrome was given to this disease in the year 1982 only.

3. 1983
During this year 33 other countries confirmed that some of their citizens were suffering from this disease. I must tell you that lots of researches were being carried out during this period.

4. 1985
This was the year when the actor Rock Hudson died of AIDS.

Also Ryan white was expelled from his school in Indiana since he was found suffering from this disease. This was the year when our president Ronald Reagan at first used the word AIDS in public. This was the first time when the word AIDS was used in public.

5. 1990
This was the year when the Ryan White died of the AIDS after fighting for his admission in some school. His age at that time was just 19 years. I must tell you that this forced the congress to think about the AIDS patients. They pass an act in this year to help the AIDS patients.

Ever since then lots of work has been done for the AIDS patients and believe me that they are not being respected in the society.

Aids And Hiv

Aids and HIV

Aids and HIV have not been around for a very long time and yet, few diseases have ever had such a profound affect that this one has had. It has taken the lives of millions of people and has gained the attention of virtually every nation in the world. In addition, although it is often at the forefront of charity and fundraisers, there is still no cure. Doctors and researcher are still fighting to create a society without AIDS.

Despite the combined efforts of some of the leading doctors and scientists, the disease is still rampant and baffling. All over the globe teams of scientists are actually dedicating their time and resources to finding an HIV reservoirs control which they hope will eventually lead them to their ultimate goal, an HIV reservoirs cure. What is it about this particular disease that makes it so difficult to cure?

Doctors and researchers are finding that this disease has a number of qualities that make it particularly difficult to treat. One of these things is the diseases’ ability to change and become resilient to the drugs being used to fight it. Another factor that makes the disease almost impossible to eradicate, is the fact that the disease establishes reservoirs. At this point, the goal of doctors is to provide patients with a variety of drugs that act as an HIV reservoirs control.

To date, one of the most common strategies to combat the disease is the use of a cocktail of drugs. Doctors have found that they have to attack the disease when it is not dormant, and they use various drugs that attack the disease in a number of different ways. Although they cannot cure the individual, doctors have found that they can keep the HIV from rapidly reproducing and damaging the immune system, which leaves the patient susceptible to many other conditions. The drug cocktail administered to patients permits the doctors to help neutralize the disease and contain it. By doing this, the infected person may, in many cases, lead an almost normal life span.

Researchers and doctors also know that if they only use one kind of drug, there is a very good chance that the HIV would become impervious to the drug, and it would no longer be effective. By using two drugs in combination it usually takes the disease longer to become resistant or in the worst-case scenario, from mutating.

When a patient is first given treatment they are often required to take a number of different drugs, one of these is usually what is known as a booster. This particular drug enhances or boosts the effectiveness of the other drugs and allows the patient to take the other drugs in a reduced quantity. The major advantage of this is that many of the drugs that HIV patients have to take have very serious side effects.

When doctors recognize that a patient is no longer responding to the first medicines that they were prescribed, they will often mix up the cocktail and resume treatment. When a patient undergoes treatment, they must understand that they will have to take special drugs for the rest of their life. If they stop taking the drugs, the disease will take over and will destroy their immune system.

What many people do not realize is that although the disease can be slowed, or controlled, it cannot be totally eradicated from the body. One of the main reasons for this is that the HIV is constantly changing and mutating, and it is different from person to person.

The other major reason is the reservoirs. HIV is able to hide from drugs and immune surveillance in different organs and regions of the body. In one person the latent form of the disease may be hiding mainly in the brain while in another individual it may be mainly in the gut. Doctors are not yet able to determine and identify all the places where the disease can hide. They are often not able to find the HIV when it is in a dormant state. This means that the disease may have hidden locations in a person lasting for decades.

The ability of the disease to hide and remain dormant makes some people wonder if the disease can ever truly be “cured”. Some believe that, like the common cold, the disease will always be around, but that man will eventually be able to control and manage it. That, in due course, it will no longer be the life threatening disease that it is today.
